Dying my own hair is something I never thought I'd do and it's something that I've always actually said I will never ever do. It is something that has never been my personal preference, mainly because I just do not trust myself and secondly because my hair is blonde and we all know how blonde can go if it's done wrong. I've heard of so many hair disasters when people try to dye their hair blonde, including people getting orange roots, it snapping hair off and more, so I've always just eliminated any risks and gone to the salon. Recently though I decided to dye my hair by myself, in the comfort of my own home with Live Color XXL and I wanted to talk to you about how I got on...
Firstly, I'd just like to say that I would never ever endorse something that isn't actually good, particularly when it comes to something like hair dye, hair care is a big passion of mine and I am more than happy to talk to you about Color XXL because I am genuinely extremely impressed with it and it truly did prove me wrong about home dyes. If you read my blog often you'll know just how much I am into my hair care. Ever since nasty hot-bonded extensions pretty much ruined my hair, I've tried to move away from bleach and really take care of my hair. If you missed that, make sure you read my hair growth/strength tips post and read about the products that have made my hair strong again. Now that's out of the way, it's time to talk hair colour.
I last got my hair dyed around 12 weeks ago at Umberto Giannini in Harvey Nichols (read about that here) and I've never been happier with my hair! After 12 weeks though, my roots started to grow out and I really needed to brighten my hair up. I just didn't/don't really have time to get my hair done at the moment so a quick and easy home dye was the best option for me. Whilst my colour has lasted really well - my Mum always says that the true sign of a good hair dresser is how well the colour lasts and this did/has lasted really nicely. |
So I decided that my hair needed refreshing, for this reason, I decided to just put some highlights into the front of my hair. Firstly, I decided to go with a few highlights because I am trying to keep my hair in good condition so I don't want to put too much bleach into it, secondly, I love the highlighted look of my hair right now and I don't want to go back to completely bleached roots. So I did it, I decided to use Live Color XXL to put a few highlights in my hair and I was so surprised at how easy I found it, particularly because I assumed that this kit was only for fully dying the hair.
Up until around 13 my hair was naturally bright blonde but as I got older, my hair soon turned into an indescribable mousey light brown colour, or something that I prefer to call grey. It was really dull and awful so I kept getting highlights. When I was about 16 I decided to start getting bleach highlights, I went through the Barbie bleach stage and then when I hit 19 I realised that I should start taking more care of my hair and only use more natural blonde tones to get it back to health. I feel like my hair is finally back to health now and this is why I decided to finally dye my hair myself.
I clipped some kitchen foil underneath the section that I was highlighting, just so that I didn't stain the rest of my hair. I pulled out a few strands that I wanted brightening, pulled them up and using gloves I rubbed the dye into the strands that I wanted to highlight. I put some Charles Worthington strengthening conditioner through the ends whilst I waited for the roots to take to the colour.
Here you can see the strands that I did to begin with, I really didn't do it that neat but it didn't turn out streaky at all, it completely lifted my roots in 40 minutes but in such a nice, highlighted way rather than a block bleach way.I mixed together the kit which was so easy to do, just follow the instructions - it takes about 30 seconds to do.
I looked at the re-growth section and followed it step by step but changed it in the sense that I just did a few highlights instead of painting the whole root section.
Watch my quick video here where I talk all about it and you can see before and after:
So there we have it, hopefully once you've watched the video you'll be able to see what it looks like afterwards. I am truly so impressed with this hair kit, I am a complete virgin and novice when it comes to dying my hair, this is the first time I have done it and it certainly wont be the last - I highly recommend this product. I always thought that Live Color XXL was only for people who wanted to go super bright, but by adapting the instructions a little bit and adding a few highlights where I wanted to brighten my hair, I've managed to refreshed and revamp my hair for at least another 12 weeks (without breaking the bank or my hair!) As I said in the video, if I can do it, anyone can, it was so easy and I love the result. After 40 minutes, my roots were completely lifted and I was left with new, fresh, shiny hair. Hooray.
I dyed my hair using Live Color XXL 00A, you can find out more about it here.
Have you ever dyed your hair at home? Do you have any tips? Would you do this now?
*I worked in collaboration with L/C for this post but as always, my opinion is 100% honest and I truly love this product and would recommend it to anyone.

Ahh really?!?!! I've heard so many people say that it's got them from brown to blonde, it lifted my roots so well. Yeah I guess it's just because it's going from a dark colour but yeh purple toner should do the trick! x
DeleteI love blonde highlights but they do end up being very costly to maintain, so this looks like a real viable option for keeping them fresh at home! Thanks for the tips and the photos make it look easy!
