One of the things I'm asked the most is 'what fake tan do you wear?’ We all know how much I love being tanned, when I'm tanned, I feel more confident. If you asked me last year, most of the time, fortunately, I would say my tan was real because I was away so much. As someone who is completely against sunbeds, I've always chased the real sun or used fake tan. I'm a sucker for the sunshine and have always kind of turned a blind eye to the dangers of the sun, as warm and beautiful as it may be, it isn't good for us.
I'm pleased to say that this year, even though I've been going away a lot again, I haven't been worshipping the sun as much as I would in previous years. Even if I am abroad, I've been enjoying the sun from afar rather than roasting myself in it. If you've been reading my blog for a long time you'll know that HeShi is one of my absolute favourite tan brands. I'm a little bit of a fake tan snob and I honestly have tried and tested most of them on the market. With Summer coming up I wanted to do a post talking about my top fake tanning tips, my ways to get the perfect glow this Summer and my foolproof tips for the best fake tan application. Once you've mastered the art of fake tanning, you can't even tell that it's fake!
One of the things I look for in fake tans nowadays is ingredients, I try to avoid putting harmful ingredients onto my body. He-Shi’s products have added skincare benefits, they're paraben and alcohol free and all their products are suitable for the face and body. If you read my blog post about how to get rid of underskin spots, you'll know that I'm super de-hydrated and always need more moisturise in my skin. He-Shi contains moisture lock technology to improve hydration and the condition of the skin. Let's talk about my top tips to get the best, long-lasting fake tan!

The week before: Not prepping before applying fake tan is where most people go wrong. The other week, I didn't have time to prep so I had to reapply over old fake tan and trust me, I was a scaly mess. If you have the time, for example, you know you're going somewhere on Saturday and don't need to be tanned all week, starting Monday, I'd start exfoliating and scrubbing off any old tan. I like to use a body scrub with vitamin E for my exfoliation, to be honest, any exfoliator is good but I like to use one that’s natural and hydrates my skin. I always use exfoliating gloves, from my experience, they're an absolute must. It takes me about 10 minutes every morning in the shower to go over my body, I put some exfoliating body wash onto the gloves and gently scrub. I do find it’s easier to apply tan if you’ve exfoliated about three times beforehand, but if you don’t have the time, a day before is fine - just make sure you've got all the old fake tan off so you can start with a fresh base.
The night before: I never shave before applying fake tan, so I tend to shave the morning after application otherwise it goes into my pores. Usually it's okay to shave the evening before but never the day you're about to fake tan!
Application: From a speed angle, He-Shi's Rapid 1 Hour Liquid Tan is amazing (hands down my favourite tan ever). It is an instant tan in the sense that you get an instant glow but it also develops for 8 hours after application. You then wash it off and the colour stays for up to 10 days afterwards. I find this is the easiest fake tan to apply, it has a water type consistency which makes me feel so hydrated and silky. It dries in seconds and also contains 93% of natural ingredients. You can read my full review of this product here. This also comes with a colour guide, which is great to see how intense the colour will be. I apply the tan with He-Shi’s tanning mitt – using small circular motions I start from my toes and move all the way up. To finish off, I put a small amount of tan on my hands and face. If you're more of a mousse lover then He-Shi's Foaming Mousse is incredible. Whilst I'm more of a gel/liquid lover myself (purely for how hydrated these products make my skin feel), I do find mousse so easy to apply. He-Shi’s mousse is one of the best for colour, I get the most incredible colour every time I wear He-Shi mousse. You can see me wearing it in Cyprus on the photos below!
The morning after: I wake up and wash it off and then you're always left with the nicest, streak free finish. I stand in the water until the shower runs completely clear and then you know it's all gone.
The week after: I always recommend using a gradual tanning moisturiser for a week after to keep the tan glowing day after day. He-Shi’s products have amazing staying power; I find that using their gradual day to day tan over the top is the best way to keep the tan from going scaley and to stop the tan fading. It is also another way to keep that moisture locked in! Another great tan for this (and my go-to at the moment!) is He-Shi's body sculpting gradual tan (exclusive to Boots). It has a gel type consistency and it feels incredible, after application my skin instantly feels smooth and hydrated. There are so many benefits to He-Shi's body sculpting gradual tan, it contains ingredients that actually help to break down fat and improve the appearance of cellulite. Pretty impressive if you ask me!
For me, the most important thing is prep and then maintaining the tan with a really good gradual moisturiser, that's my (not so) secret tip! He-Shi is definitely my number one for colour, ease and speed of application and I love that it's full of natural ingredients that benefit the skin.
You can shop He-Shi online here at Boots.
How do you feel about fake tan/sun exposure? Do you like going in the sunshine? Do you like fake tan? Have you ever used He-Shi?
Lots of love, Em x
