Oh hello February, I'm glad you're here! I feel like once Christmas is over, we eagerly await for Spring to come. We're currently in that lull point between Christmas and Spring and gosh even I, Mrs positive, was feeling a little down in January, waiting for adventure. I get really itchy feet if I don't get in the fresh air and explore (even if that just means walking around my hometown). Ever since I was born, I've loved going out, exploring, getting my hands dirty and just living life. Life is there for living and I'm a fan of being active and making my own adventures, it doesn't have to be sunny to do that. So yeah, January may have been a little dull, getting over a few too many mince pies and slowly pushing ourselves back into the working zone, but now February is here, I'm determined to explore, have fun and feel free. I want to do fun, different things this year. Nothing makes me happier than feeling a sense of adventure and that's exactly what I did this weekend. Matt and I had such an incredible time on our ski trip in December so we decided to bring the slopes closer to home and explore a local indoor slope. A big thanks to Light* & Free for inspiring this experience. You could also win an absolutely amazing prize - more details at the end of this post and through the Light* & Free x Spotify Hub (trust me, it's good, music fans, you don't want to miss this!), so keep reading...
If I'm honest, as a family we've been struggling for the last few months with some health issues, and if anything, it's only made me want to enjoy life even more. I enjoy exciting and dynamic experiences so where better to head for a date night than the local SnoZone. I was so petrified to ski back in December and just like surfing in Sri Lanka, I fell well and truly in love with skiing. I've been itching to get back on the slopes since I landed back in the UK!
I didn't think I'd be getting my thermals out again so soon but I was more than happy to be slipping back into them.
Suited and booted, it was time to hit the slopes. In my head, I was really excited to fill up on a hefty plate of pancakes after skiing. Seriously, the best thing about skiing is post-ski food. You can't beat it.
I guess skiing is a little bit like driving, once you learn, you don't really forget, you just get better with practice. If you ever read my blog post about my first time skiing, filled with all my top ski tips for beginners, you'll know I said how petrified I was to begin with, but I just picked it up. Much like ice skating and surfing, once you're over the fear factor, it's exhilarating. Nothing beats gliding down the mountains with that little chill in your hair.
Granted, I knew the slopes in the UK wouldn't compare to those in Austria (my Austrian ski instructor was right when he said I was learning on seriously steep slopes!) but what a fun, exhilarating way to spend a weekend, particularly if you're wanting to pick skiing up or just get out of the house and do something different. As someone who works out a lot, I'm addicted to staying active, whether that's quickly moving my legs or getting fresh air. Skiing is a really nice but different way to do that. It's full of giggles, energy and hopefully, not too many falls as the slope is pretty tame. I felt like a little bit of a professional.
I was mainly just happy to get back on the slopes and make sure my muscles hadn't forgot how to ski! I know if I suddenly stopped skiing for a year after my first trip, I'd be pretty terrified to get back onto it so this allowed me to keep my moves up. One things for sure, it's inspired me to book another ski trip, pronto. I honestly had the loveliest time, such a different, fun date day and so close to home too. There's something about skiing that makes me feel so free and energised. Maybe it's the cold!
One of the best things about skiing? Apres. Obviously, apres ski isn't a thing in the UK so my way of doing apres? We headed home, put my favourite speaker on, blasted out our ski playlist (it reminds me of our trip so much!) drank raw cacao hot chocolates, topped with cinnamon and I whipped up hefty pile of my favourite pancakes, topped with Light* & Free of course. You might remember this recipe from my recent healthy pancake recipe.
