HOW TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF IN 2023 - Motivation Tips For The New Year

Ad affiliate throughout - I can't believe we are almost at the end of January! Is it me or has this month just flown by? Maybe because I've been travelling... But usually I'm one of those people who finds January just drags and drags. I wanted to do a post on motivation and specifically how to get yourself motivated for 2023. Because I've been away for the majority of this month, I haven't had a chance to implement any changes in my routine yet but now I'm back I'm feeling excited to the ball rolling... I missed out on my dry Jan this year but now, the wellness goals start.

I know some people are against the whole 'January Motivation' trend, however I really can't see anything wrong with it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to better yourself, better your routine and better your way of life. Even if it's the tiniest change if it's going to make you feel better, then of course you should do it!

Below I've wrote up some of the ways I already motivate myself but also some new ways I'm hoping to implement this year. I don't know what it is but I am feeling so positive for the year ahead - excited to see what it's going to bring me!

All things Fitness

I'm a workout girlie. Always have been, I loved sport at school and going to the gym is my happy place. But that's not to say it's always been that way. I had to be really disciplined with myself to implement it as a part of my routine and there have been many instances where I've fallen off the wagon (like literally last month. December was a disaster). But I have a few fail safe ways that push me to get back on the horse and get fitness back into my routine again.

1. Find a workout that you love - This one may take a bit of time, but it makes all the difference. If you hate running for example you're not going to want to go on a run. Ever. But if you love pilates... then it's a fair bit easier to get the motivation to go. Do a trial at you closest gym and try all the different classes they have on offer until you find something where you leave feeling like you worked hard but you had fun! For me this is Blaze at David Lloyd. I honestly love it so much and I never regret going! David Lloyd have so many incredible classes for everyone. My step dad does spin, my Mum loves Zumba, I love Blaze and my boyfriend just loves the gym.

2. Pre Book your classes - Once you have found that workout you love, prebook your classes! That way you can add them to your calendar and treat them as something you need to tick off that day. If it's already prebooked, planned and written down it gives you less of a reason to decide to skip it. It's booked. You're going. Plus a lot of places offer a penalty for last minute cancellations and that's a pretty good motivation.

3. Buy new workout gear! - There's something about a new workout set that makes me want to just get in the gym. Maybe it's to show it off, who knows. Maybe it's to get my moneys worth. But all I know is that it makes me want to workout. So treat yourself! If you're looking in the mirror and feeling good in your workout clothes then it makes the scariness of the gym a little bit easier. If you're feeling good your confidence will be up. So go, workout, give your body the movement it needs and leave with a smile on your face! I've listed some items that I personally love below...

4. Set out your gym kit the night before - Such a small thing to do but it makes a huge difference. Don't allow yourself to put a different outfit on. If your kit is there, ready to go put it straight on. I guarantee you won't find any excuse to change out of it again.

5. Find a workout partner/get an Apple Watch - This is all about holding yourself accountable... Or having someone else do that for you. If you find yourself a gym buddy then this is the best way to keep on track! You can motivate each other to get to the gym, don't allow each other to come up with excuses. Push each other to be the best version of themselves. If you can't find a workout partner then grab yourself a Fitbit or an Apple Watch. They track your workouts and it almost becomes kind of a game. I know that I'm slightly addicted to making sure I close all my rings on my Apple Watch every day...

Waking Up Earlier

I really REALLY don't want to have to do this, but I know it's going to make such a difference to my life. I love lie ins. I could happily lie in bed till 9.30 but now, I feel guilt once I see the clock is past 8.30. My problem is I go to bed WAY too late. I also know that if I lie in then I'm going to be running around like a crazy person, always pressed for time during the day and that's just not the vibe I want to bring in to 2023.
Currently I'm normally up and out of bed by 7.45 at the latest but I really want to see myself as up and ready to go by 7. It's not going to happen overnight, I'm not all of a sudden going to be this energetic, happy morning person. But I do need to start gradually implementing earlier mornings. Even if it means I can just take 15 minutes to slowly drink my matcha rather than just gulping it down. It'll also give me a chance to set out my day. Write out my to do list. Check in with emails, organise what's important and what's not. If you start the day in a more relaxed, calm environment with a clear head then the rest of your day will flow the exact same way. I have the weekends for lie ins but during the week - let's get on up and start the day fresh and early! Once you set the intentions, it's so much easier to get it done and get up earlier.

Motivational Podcasts

I'm very very late to this whole podcast thing. When I say I only really started listening to them at the end of last year I mean it. I was just never one to plug headphones in when walking... But now I can't see how I ever lived without them. I now look forward to my daily walks because I always finish them feeling refreshed and motivated! Here's a list of my current favourites:

- The Skinny Confidential
- Diary of a CEO
- Ted Talks Daily (I love learning! So many different topics.)
- Call her Daddy
- Anything Goes by Emma Chamberlain
-High Low with EmRata

I tend to listen to a variety of podcasts as you can see above but I find them all motivational in some way. Whether that's someone just explaining their road to success or just having someone speak on certain topics that surround us during this day and age, I find they all make me think a bit more outside the box.

Keep A Diary

I find having a diary holds me accountable for so many things that I need to achieve during my day. There's something about crossing something out that is so satisfying! It's also a great way to be able to list your goals and what you want to achieve.
The night before, take 5 minutes before bed and list 5 things you want to achieve the next day. They don't necessarily have to be work related. It could literally be 'do a colours wash' but at least you've written it down, you're holding yourself accountable. It could even be a really nice one like 'read one chapter of my book'. I find having things on paper really helps to keep me motivated. You should try it! Here are some great diaries that I love below:

Pinterest

Pinterest is your friend! I use it to make moodboards of all sorts of things. Whether that's recipes or outfits it gives me so much inspiration. This year I made a Pinterest board of my 2023 mood. Meaning - how I want things to look. How I want to dress, the fun times I'll be having, the type of destinations I want to holiday too. I pinned everything and anything that I wanted to achieve this year and whenever I feel myself lacking in motivation or self belief, I come back and look at the board and I get this rush of 'Yes, I can achieve this. I can have all this!'
It's almost a way of drawing out your dream year. To look at those images constantly, it becomes ingrained in our minds. If you want to change up your style - make a Pinterest board and revert back to it constantly. If you would like to try eating less meat - pin a load of recipes and it'll help guide you on your journey.
There are so many ways you can use Pinterest to help you pinpoint your achievements, so if you don't already have an account go make one and get pinning!

The leggings

Motivation is one of those things that you're not going to achieve overnight. Remember that. I wish it were that easy. But the way I look at it, I always think about how it's going to better me. Although it may take discipline at first, in the end all of these things are going to make my life easier. Another good tip is think about what else you could be doing. So if you're struggling to get out of bed in the morning but all you're doing is scrolling on your phone think about what else you could be doing in that time - making your morning coffee, writing in your diary, listening to the birdsong... I always find this way of thinking helps me a lot, ESPECIALLY when it comes to going to the gym.
I hope that these tips and trick help you on your journey to being more motivated this year! These things all take time but if you have the patience and determination you absolutely can do it.
Let me know how you're getting on over on my Instagram @emshelx - happy to hold you accountable if needs be!
I'm also having a lot of fun over on TikTok right now - @emshelx so please don't forget to check me out on there too.
With all that being said, I'm wishing you all the most amazing 2023. I am so excited to smash this year and I hope you're all feeling the same way!

Lots of love, Em x
