What Should I Wear for my Graduation? Graduation Dress Ideas

Classic White Dress

Ad affiliate throughout - Okay, it's here!  The day has finally arrived.  Years of late night study sessions, endless cups of coffee, and countless memories with friends you have made for life have culminated in this single significant milestone: your University Graduation.  As you prepare to don your cap and gown, the question arises, what should you wear underneath to celebrate this very proud occasion (and may I by the way be one of the first to congratulate you because I know how hard you have worked).

Fear not, I am here to guide you through this journey so that you can join your University alumni in style.

When I graduated (too long ago), I was in a real panic before the event because I just hadn't had the time to choose anything to wear.  I knew I wanted something fitted and classic looking and I knew I wanted a light colour to contrast with the gown.  I also wanted something that I could go on and wear for a family meal afterwards - proud mum, stepdad, brother and grandparents.  It breaks my heart to look back and think that my nanna is no longer with us but it also makes me so happy that we got to take her on a lovely family meal as she was such a proud and supportive nanna.  So, back to clothing, I ended up going around the houses looking endlessly at Revolve.  I must have spent hours not particularly seeing anything that fit the requirements when 'ping' I thought, why am I over complicating it, keep it simple and I did.  I purchased the most simple, classic, comfortable slightly off white short dress for £25 and goodness to this day it was one of the best I have ever had.

So what should you wear I hear you say?  Well, the answer is, exactly what you want, what you know suits you and what you feel comfortable and happy in.  This day is about you, being yourself and becoming an independent professional woman who is in control of her own life and it starts with your wardrobe!  To get you going, here are some ideas:
Classic Fit Dress

The Classic Dress:

You can never go wrong with a classic dress.  These A line or fit and flare style dresses in solid colours or subtle patterns are timeless pieces that not only flatter most body types but also look polished on photographs.  Pair this with simple heels or ballet flats for a look that's effortlessly chic.  I had wanted some Louboutin heels for years and I decided I would treat myself as these would be my standout piece.  I opted for Very Prive Patent Leather Court and while yes, these were pricey, they have served me very well for some lovely occasions over the years.

The Maxi Dress:

Another great choice for Graduation is a maxi dress.  This offers elegance and comfort and the floor length gives it formality and grace making it ceremony worth.  You could go wild with your choice in maxi dresses - from sleek and fitted to flowy and bohemian which means you will definitely find one that suits your personality. Maxi dresses are great for photographs too and because they're airy they can provide much comfort at sometimes hot and sticky ceremonies. You can also pair them with very comfortable footwear and nobody would ever know.

The Midi Dress:

Another ideal choice for Graduation, effortlessly bringing together comfort and elegance.  Falling between the knee and ankle it offers a sophisticated silhouette and flatters lots of body types.  It looks polished and is ceremony appropriate and is also ideal for mingling afterwards.
Skirt and Blouse Combo
Tara Contrast Ruffle Midi Skirt by Reiss - this is such a lovely sophisticated skirt and sleeveless blouse combo

The Skirt and Blouse combo:

If you love to mix and match a skirt and blouse combo offers lots of possibilities. A high waisted midi skirt paired with a delicate blouse or sleeveless top always looks super feminine and graceful.

Lovers and Friends Jumpsuit

Elena Jumpsuit - Lovers and Friends

The Jumpsuit:

Jumpsuits are having a moment and I love them.  They're a great opportunity for a graduation - stylish, comfortable, easy to wear and look great.  A jumpsuit can make a statement.  Look for one with a cinched waist to highlight your figure and opt for wide legs for a touch of drama.  I love the Elena Jumpsuit by Lovers and Friends and it brings together the on trend waistcoat with trousers.  Dress it with some standout jewellery and you're good to go.
Keith and Charles Leather Strappy Espadrille Wedges

Footwear:

Now, while I did go for skyscraper heels that I'd longed for, note to self - it is a long day and Graduation Ceremonies can mean you are on your feet a lot.  I would advise high heels if you want them for photos but get one of your proud relatives to carry something more comfortable that you can change in to!  Block heels, wedges or dressy flats look equally as nice and your feet will thank you later.  After all, you want to enjoy every moment of this special day and not be distracted by sore feet.
Monica Vinader charm bracelet

Final Touches:

Remember to add personal touches to your outfit.  This is a special and memorable day and a piece of jewellery with sentimental value such as this Monica Vinader Charm Bracelet  which can be engraved or a family heirloom or a splash of your favourite colour can make your outfit unique.

Graduation is a day to celebrate your achievements and look forward to what the future has to hold for you and the future you want to create.  Whatever you choose to wear make sure it reflects your personality and makes you feel confident and beautiful.  This is your moment to shine.

Lots of love, Em x
